The Inter-American Convention Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials convention is intended to prevent, combat, and eradicate illicit manufacturing and trafficking in firearms, ammunition, explosives, and other related materials; and to promote and encourage cooperation and exchange of information and experience among states in order to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in these items. Each state must take necessary measures to detect and prevent illicit trafficking in firearms, ammunition, explosives, and other related materials between its territory and that of other states by strengthening controls at export locations.

The International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System facilitates international trade by establishing a uniform system for the collection, comparison and analysis of international trade statistics, and for the transmission of data and trade documentation, and through the establishment in the States party of tariff and statistical nomenclatures in conformity with an international harmonised system. The Nomenclature governed by the Convention, commonly known as 'HS Nomenclature', is an international multipurpose nomenclature elaborated under the auspices of the World Customs Organisation (WCO). At present there are 116 contracting parties to this Convention, however, it is applied by more than 190 administrations worldwide. More than 98% of all goods traded in the world are classified according to the HS. The European Union and its Member States together represent a block of 26 contracting parties to the aforementioned Convention.

The convention for the International Customs Co-operation Council held in Kyoto in 1974 forth simplification and harmonisation of national customs procedures. On 25th of June 1999 the updated and restructured International Convention on the simplification and harmonisation of Customs Procedures (Kyoto Convention) was unanimously adopted by 114 customs administrations. This convention was restructured to deal with computerised controls and to ensure better co-operation between customs authorities mutually and with trade in general.
